Since first opening its doors in 1973,Jewish Beginnings has been a trusted cornerstone of early childhood education in the greater Milwaukee community. In a world that undeniably continues to change, holding steadfast to our core beliefs becomes more valuable. This includes recognizing the importance and effectiveness of a progressive, play-based learning approach. Our commitment to this style of teaching has remained a dependable constant for the students and families at Jewish Beginnings.

At our Jewish preschool, we emphasize developmentally appropriate practices that balance child-centered discovery with thoughtful teacher guidance. Our classrooms are filled with dynamic learning centers and meaningful activities that empower children to explore, create, and grow at their own pace.

Why play?

In the words of Albert Einstein, “Play is the highest form of research.” This quote reminds us that play is not simply fun — it’s how children test ideas while discovering themselves and the world around them. What may look like kids just messing around is actually conducting experiments and making sense of experiences. Play is the most natural way for children to gather lifelong knowledge and research consistently shows it has a lasting impact on a child’s development. Here’s how:

1. Building Social Skills

Play provides natural opportunities for children to take turns, share, cooperate, and solve conflicts. These interactions nurture countless positive character traits like kindness, patience, and the ability to form friendships. By fostering the right skills early on, Jewish Beginnings is helping to form the foundation upon which healthy relationships throughout life can be built.

2. Strengthening Communication

Imaginative play. Storytelling. Collaborative projects. What all these things have in common is the way in which they encourage children to express themselves. Conveying our personal thoughts, emotions and ideas can be challenging, even for adults. The more opportunities our preschoolers are given to practice both verbal and non-verbal communication, the more likely they will grow to become confident communicators.

3. Encouraging Emotional Growth

By acting out real-life situations or exploring emotions through pretend play, children begin to understand and regulate their feelings. Stretching their emotional intelligence muscles has been shown to strengthen key character traits. Children at Jewish Beginnings are encouraged to build empathy, resilience, and self-awareness — an invaluable trifecta.

4. Developing Problem-Solving Skills

Play invites children to become scientists. Jewish Beginnings provides a safe environment for children to experiment, test ideas, and overcome challenges. Whether it's building a Lego skyscraper, creating a fingerpainting masterpiece or navigating a group activity, we encourage the children to work through challenges. In this way, our curriculum enhances critical thinking, creativity, and perseverance.

5. Boosting Self-Confidence

As children explore their abilities and make choices in a supportive environment, they develop a sense of autonomy and confidence. Each small success builds their self-esteem and fuels a love of learning. This aligns with the Reggio Emilia approach we incorporate into our learning. This innovative philosophy of early childhood education is based on the belief that children are capable and competent learners. Our teachers and families have witnessed this to be true on a daily basis.

A Play-based Education with Serious Benefits

At Jewish Beginnings, we combine this holistic, child-centered approach with a rich exploration of Jewish heritage and values. Our goal is to not only nurture curious, capable learners — but to inspire kind, grounded individuals who carry these lessons with them to become the pioneers for a brighter future.

This is what makes Jewish Beginnings so much more than a preschool. It’s a place where children learn through play, grow through connection, and build a lifelong foundation of learning, love, and Jewish pride.
